The popular anime wears its figure skating fandom on its sleeve, with characters inspired by so many famous figure skaters!. I’ll save you the trouble of digging for my position: Yes, Yuri on Ice is gay, and it is as explicitly gay as the yuri on ice gay ice skater it depicts, which is to say, obviously but with some restrictions.
I went into Yuri!!! on Ice with this skeptical mindset. The show plunged me into the world of competitive figure skating via Yuri Katsuuki, a Japanese skater who experiences a crushing defeat at the Grand Prix in the series’ first episode. As he spirals into anxiety and self-doubt, the audience learns about Yuri’s past. The real appeal of Yuri!!! lies in its subject matter: The surface story follows Yuri Katsuki, a Japanese figure skater, who abandons the sport and returns home after a miserable loss.
Meanwhile. The Escapist's Jordan Althoff talks about their experience with Yuri on Ice's queer representation and what it meant to them. A lot of research had gone into the skating part of it as well, with the characters being based on real skaters. This last feature of sports anime may be what makes it so profitable.
It goes without saying: this is pretty dang gay. I dedicated my life to my sport and wanted to be judged and appreciated for my performances alone. So much love and appreciation for interviewer Angel and for interviewee Johnny Weir: both made me feel proud to love and appreciate Yuri!!! Like this: Like Loading I like seeing that quality from Yuri-kun too. Victor Nikiforov is another great example of a fluid expression.
I think all positive imagery of LGBT themes in sport are good. In most forms of media, LGBT people have to make logical leaps or rewrite existing narratives in order to see ourselves represented. Those who have watched it will know that there is a lot of debate around the show and whether to classify it as queer or not.
Being gay had as much to do with my performances as muscle cars or giraffes. When I started watching Yuri!!! Pingback: A Roundtable on Yuri!!! I had been yuri on ice gay ice skater about the show within the anime community for some time yet had put off watching it, unsure if the anime lived up to the hype. As I watched Victor and Yuri run to each other while maintaining eye contact!
Love this interview!
This scene, even more so than the kiss, made their relationship real to me. And so we took to Instagram to ask you guys what you yuri on ice gay ice skater of the show! July 28th, Written By Ankita. Few, if any, Yuri!!! What brought you into Yuri on Ice, and what about this show made you break your own rule and marathon it so quickly? Dedicated and committed to his craft, yet still silly and playful, and loyal to his friends and family, Victor Nikiforov is a man of many dimensions.
When Victor asks him what Eros means to him, Yuuri replies that for him it resonates with a katsudon pork cutlet bowlwhich is his favorite dish. They raised my expectations for relationships in both my personal life and in anime. Queerness was never discussed in my house, and in the rare instances it did make an appearance, such as a same-sex couple kissing on TV, my parents would quickly change the channel and never mention it or, worse, discussed it in a tone that made me wish the subject had never come up at all.
